Obituary
Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our wonderful mother, Barbara ‘Elsie’ MacLeod (nee Campbell), of Estmere, Victoria Co., departed peacefully, in Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at the age of 88 years, after a life well and fully lived.
Born in Malagawatch, Elsie was the last of her family and beloved wife of the late Malcolm Gillis (Mack) MacLeod. Remaining, to emulate her many remarkable qualities, are sons, Alexander, Estmere; Earl (Rose), Kitchener; daughter, Louise, Toronto, and grandson Austin, the light of her life.
She was a Little Narrows Presbyterian Church member, past President of the Ladies Aid and cherished sister, sister-in-law, cousin, aunt, grand-aunt, mentor, neighbour and/or loyal and true friend, to countless others.
A born teacher with a boundless love of children (and perfect penmanship!), Elsie nurtured many young pupils during her career, from early days at River Denys to her last, at Whycocomagh Federal School, Waycobah First Nation. Her second role was as a popular historical interpreter at the Highland Village Museum.
As a master craftsperson especially adept at knitting and crocheting, Elsie’s creative hands were always busy and she loved sharing her skills and knowledge. She delighted in leading The Little Narrows Knitting Club through years of shared stitches, stories and laughter, ideally with the clever young ones, Morgan and Katherine, right by her side. Together, they all conjured up comforting dolls, teddy bears, slippers, hats and scarves for donation to Leeside Transition House, a women’s and children’s shelter, in Port Hawkesbury.
We have profound gratitude for all Mom’s medical providers throughout life, especially Dr. Carlyle Chow (retired) and the entire staff of the Victoria County Memorial Hospital. Angels, all.
Cremation has taken place; burial will be private. A public Celebration of Life will be held later in 2019, with advance notices in the community papers.
Her memory may be honoured through kind and compassionate acts toward others, or donations to the Malagawatch Cemetery Association or charity of your choice.
Arrangements are under care of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com Condolences, reminiscences and photos also gratefully accepted via [email protected]
Oidhche mhath (goodnight), sweet Mom!
