Rosalie A. MacMillan
Canso, Nova Scotia
Rosalie Angela MacMillan passed away peacefully Thursday morning August 8, 2019 at Canso Seaside Manor at the age of 92. Her daughter, Isabel and son, Bill were by her side as she left behind a fiercely loving family, along with an army of adoring friends and care-givers.
Born May 7, 1927 in Halifax, she was the second daughter of Maurice Murphy and Mary Salome (Flemming) Murphy. Mom’s family on both sides were from nearby Ketch Harbour where she spent many happy summers with her cousins, aunts and uncles. She grew up on Dresden Row in Halifax attending St. Mary’s Girls School with her older sister Kathleen, and attending St. Mary’s Basilica as their home parish. Both girls were doted on by her parents and a number of aunts; sadly they lost their mother to kidney disease in their mid-teens. While visiting relatives in Canso, she met and later married Dad in 1950. Together they shared a love of life, family and friends for 66 years until Dad’s passing on July 31, 2016.
Mom was a proud homemaker and military wife, and together they raised six children. When in our teens, Mom was free to work outside of the home and enjoyed a return to the retail trade at Zellers in London Ontario, having previously worked at Eaton’s in Halifax as a young lady and also managing the MacMillan grocery store in Canso for a few years at the beginning of their marriage. Her penchant for making new friends and staying in touch was a hallmark in her life. She always encouraged us saying "to have a friend, you have to be a friend". Her Christmas card lists seemed endless, and she took pleasure in writing to each of her friends at least once a year. She was a proud member of the Catholic Women’s League and served faithfully at all of the military postings that took them to Calgary, London, Kingston, North Bay and Lahr Germany. Rosalie was also an avid curler, who enjoyed many games at the Garrison Curling Club in Kingston and travelling many places to curl in bonspiels with her team mates. She was a member of the Canso Shamrock Club, and a member of Star of the Sea Parish in Canso.
Mom was intensely proud of all her children: Bill, Canso; Howie, Wiarton, Ont.; Isabel James, Canso; Bob (Gayle), Heidelberg, Ont.; Maurice (Gail), North Bay, Ont.; Joe (Danielle), Nappanee, Ont.; son-in-law, Bill James, and daughter-in-law, Debbie MacMillan. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Deanna (Win) Nickerson, Hazel Hill; Barbara (Junior) Filiatault, Lantz; nieces, Natalie Corkum, Rachel Filiatrault, and Chrissy Nickerson; nephews, Chris Corkum, Stephen and Blair Nickerson, Derek Filiatrault and Brian Flemming and their families; Grandchildren, Michael, Colleen, Bradley, Kimberley, Angela, Melissa, David, Andrew, Brian, Sarah, Matthew, Michelle, Jennifer, and their families; Great-Grandchildren, Gage, Amelia, Isaac, Tristan, Mackenzie, Scarlett, Deacon, Benry, Ella Mae, Lucas, Timothy, Rosalie, Simon, Olivia, Abel. The joy of having so many loving grandchildren was only eclipsed as she was blessed with even more Great Grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Harold; parents Maurice and Mary, sister Kathleen (Maurice) Flemming, sisters-in-law, Isabel (Gordon) Munroe, Kaye (Don) Cohoon; Helen (Colin Corkum) MacMillan, and nephew Michael Flemming.
Both Mom and Dad enjoyed a long, happy, and well travelled retirement all over North America, hosting family and old friends at a Florida residence they had for ten years. In June of 2013 they moved home to Canso so that they could enjoy their golden years with their children Bill and Isabel, and a multitude of old friends and neighbours. They were always so pleased with frequent visits from the rest of the family and friends from away in the past six years.
It was Mom’s wish to be buried with Dad so cremation has taken place, the family will host a visitation at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 46, Canso on Wednesday, August 21 from 5 - 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, August 22, 11 a.m. in Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Canso, with Father Jonathan Nnajiofor officiating, with burial to follow in the parish cemetery. The family invites all to a reception and light lunch after the mass and burial at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 46 Canso. Memorial Donations may be made to the Canso Seaside Manor, Star of the Sea Church, or to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 46 in Canso. Family flowers only please.
