It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Catherine Patricia "Pat" McNamara (Gerrior) of Evanston, Richmond County. Pat died peacefully in the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home at the age of 79 on Thursday, August 29th, 2019. She was born in Johnstown, Richmond County on March 11th, 1940. She was the daughter of Mary Catherine (Campbell) and the late Joseph Gerrior.
Pat was predeceased by her husband, John Vincent McNamara; infant son, Gorden; sister, Jean (Blair) McNamara; brother, George Gerrior and foster brother, Henry Mitchell. Pat is survived by her sons, Joey McNamara, Michael (Lisa) McNamara; daughters, Cathy (Darrell) Symonds, Eleanor (Gordie) Poirier and stepdaughter, Mary Annette (Derrick) DeCoste and family; grandchildren, Christina (Jamie), Mary, Keri (Darryl), Miranda (Tyler), Ainslee, Garrison, Cassia and Sophie, great-grandchildren, Mia, Vincent and Nora; siblings, Annie (Pius) White, Mary Josephine (Terry) McNamara, Neil Gerrior; sisters-in-law, Mary Anita Gerrior, Shirley McNamara, Anne McNamara, and Muriel (Gordie) Wilkie; godchildren, Andrea Gerrior, Rosalie McNamara and Sheldon White; best friends, Peggy and Donnie McNeil, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Pat was a quiet, gentle woman who would help others in any way she could. She was most happy while watching any kind of sports that her children or grandchildren were involved in. Whenever her TV was on you could be sure it was sports of any kind. Never a Christmas Eve went by without her in the kitchen making her rabbit pies for family and friends. She enjoyed playing bingo, 45’s, and the odd game of crib. She was a member of the Riverdale bowling and dart leagues. She also enjoyed knitting, sewing and baking especially her famous molasses cookies. Pat was a Graduate of the Cape Breton Business College, Sydney, Nova Scotia. She worked at the Co-op Building Supplies on Barron Rd, Sydney and also the Port Hawkesbury location. She worked at the Woolco in Port Hawkesbury. Most of her life was at home taking care of her children. Pat also worked for a few families babysitting and going to many homes taking care of residence.
Pat came from a musical family and enjoyed accompanying many fiddle players on piano. She loved singing with her "Gerrior Sisters" along with her mom for many concerts in the area for many years.
We would like to thank the staff at the Port Hawkesbury nursing home for the care she received and especially the compassion they showed in her final days. We would also like to thank Dr. Collins and Dr. Pluta for her care over the years.
