MacLEAN, Nelson Peter – Nov. 27, 1940 – Nov. 28, 2019. It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of a loving husband, father and grandfather, who passed away peacefully at home in Little Narrows. Born in Orangedale, he was the son of the late John Y and Cassie (MacDonald) MacLean. Dad left Orangedale in his teens with his sister, Annie Mae. They stayed in Florida for a short time with their sister, Hughena and then moved to Boston. He worked at Newton Foods in Massachusetts for many years. He then moved to Ontario where he worked for United Vanlines moving furniture. In 1975 he moved back to Massachusetts where he worked at Grant Construction. Here he was electrocuted by 21,800 volts. Dad was a fighter, they said he would not survive, but he did and continued to fight so many more battles, car accidents, surgeries and cancer. Dad then moved back to Cape Breton, settling in Little Narrows until his death. He worked as a ferryman, lumberman and fisherman. He was a strong gentle man, who loved fishing, hunting and spending time with his family. Also many nights were travelled to friends and family for a good game of cards. You would often find dad travelling along the boom road with one or more of his brothers and many times you would see "the baby" either driving or co-piloting. Nelson is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; son, Dwayne MacLean (Lois); daughters, Kim D’Entremont (Mark); Wendy MacLean (from first wife); Sharlene MacLean (Cory), Estmere; step-daughter, Kim MacNeil – MacDonald, Sydney; grandchildren, Bethany (who was always counted on to decorate for Dad, especially Christmas) Breagha (Dad would often sit there rubbing her back and combing her hair as they sat watching the hockey games together, and becoming the "new baby in town" as she puts it), Elizabeth, Nick and William, Chantel and Curtis; great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John Y and Cassie; sisters, Hughena, Kaye and Annie Mae; brothers, Clarence, Daniel, William, Alexander, Freddie, Edmond and Ralph. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, December 4 at 2 p.m. in Sacred Heart Cemetery, MacKinnon’s Harbour with Father Hughie MacNeil officiating. Memorial donations may be made to a local SPCA or to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh.
