WAECHTER, Donald "Don" George – Age 84. The family of Don Waechter, a long-time resident of Port Hawkesbury, wishes to announce his passing on Friday, January 24, 2020 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Tompkins, Saskatchewan, he was the son of the late William and Mary (MacLennan) Waechter. After a term as a pilot in the RCAF, he worked in industry in the Port Hawkesbury area. Don’s lifelong interest in aviation came full circle as he finished his working career as manager of the Port Hawkesbury Airport. Since a young boy, he had an appreciation for wildlife and the environment, and will be remembered with his binoculars at the ready to observe birds that found their way into the back yard. He was naturally inquisitive and open to discussion on most topics, exercised with equal measures of intelligent debate and good humour. Don is survived by his sister, Wilena Waechter, Banff, AB; his children, Donald, Kentville; Bill and his wife Tammy, Leamington, ON and Lisa, London, England; his grandchildren, Scott, Mark, Valerie, Ian and Erin. He is also survived by his extended MacLellan family with whom he shared many memories, and his numerous loving nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his best friend and beloved wife of 53 years, Marlene (MacLellan) in 2018. A funeral mass of celebration will take place on Friday, January 31st at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 138 Granville Street, Port Hawkesbury with Rev. Conrad Edwards officiating.
