Father MacDonald came to my church in Pictou in 1977. I was 8 years old. I had asked our previous priest every Sunday after mass if I could be an alter server. He always said no. After Father MacDonald's first mass, my family and I waited to meet him and I asked could I be an alter girl. There had only been boys up to that time. He immediately opened his arms and said "Of course you can!" I was so thrilled. I took my duties as an alter server very seriously from age 8 to 12. I looked up to him so much. He was such a lovley man and such a credit to the church, parish and diocese. I am a lapsed Catholic at this point but I will always remember what a wonderful priest he was and what an impact he had on my small town Catholic congregation. Sending my sincere condolences to his family and flock and reflecting on my time with him on the news of his passing.

Our sincerest condolences to all the families of Fr. Hughie D. We were blessed to have Fr. Hughie for our parish priest in Creignish for twenty years. He was an amazing person and a wonderful friend. We have lots of fond memories of his visits and our trips to Iona and Washabuck, where he so fondly remembered everyone, even where they lived although it was many many years ago. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. May he Rest In Peace.

I had the pleasure of lunch with Father Hughie on more than one occasion when he was in Arichat. He was very open to discussing many topics with a travelling salesman with a Plymouth Brethren background. Nothing but find memories of those times together.

Sincerest condolences on the passing of Fr. Hughie D. He was not an ordinary man nor priest. He'd hate me for saying this, but as your obituary so eloquently captured about his life of service, he was the equivalent of Mother Theresa within our midst. He remained the same dedicated, humble, compassionate, and upbeat person at 95 as he was when we were first privileged to meet him in 1952. RIP. Most sincerely, Vince & Charlotte MacLean Washabuck

Father Hughie D. was an amazing priest and human being who continuously gave of himself to us all. His kindness and wise words will be with me forever. He was the best of the best and so humble that he's probably having a heartfelt laugh because there can't be a visitation. Mass and people were what mattered to him. He earned his rest. God Bless Everyone He Touched.

I have known Father Hughie all of my life, and I treasure every memory that I have of him. He has helped so many people throughout his years. It did not matter if they belonged to a church or not, he always had a listening ear and always left you with a feeling of hope and love. Father Hughie helped people who had addiction issues, people who had trouble in their hearts and minds. A more compassionate and loving person you will never find. We will treasure our memories, and so will our children. He is now in his rightful place, and I know his smile is huge! God love you Father Hughie. We will miss you, but never forget you.

Father Hugh.......this protestant and her family thought the world of him. He was such a joyful loving man to all and never let denomination be a barrier to his friendship and support. He was instrumental in supporting our dad in his battle against his addiction alcohol, and was one of the wonderful Port Hawkesbury gentlemen who visited dad the day before his passing. There was gales of laughter coming from the room. You have taught us a lot Fr. Hughie. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. Sincerely, Deb Langley
