Mary Jess and family were close to our family growing up. Figure skating and school pursuits were common bonds, along with shared musical and community events. Mary Jess and Eddy raised a wonderful family, and gave generously of their time and talents to friends and community. Their political and educational work especially reflected this. They're together again in heaven but we will miss the caring and dynamic Mary Jess. May she rest in peace.

Mary Jess was a tireless advocate for students. NSSBA was so lucky to count her as one of our presidents. What I will remember most though were all her kind gestures. She and Ed made up a special lotion for my horse's wound. Her Christmas fruitcake for the staff was legendary. Rest in peace Mary Jess.

I met Mary Jess in 2016 and after sitting beside her for 15 minutes of my first school board meeting, it was like I knew her for years.Over the next year she taught me so much about the education system in this province. We had numbers of discussions about what was working, needed to be changed and what needed to be scrapped all together. She was a fountain of knowledge and I took in all the information she offered to me. The education system of Nova Scotia has benefitted greatly from having Mary Jess in it from teacher to school board member and every position she held in between a true life long learner. My dear friend Mary Jess, many people have greatly benefitted from having you in their lives. I will miss the ramdon 2 hour calls, there she says,"Well I have to go I just pulled into the hospital parking and have to find a spot." It is your turn to rest, Rest in Peace, Mary Jess!

To the MacDonald Family we offer our deepest sympathy on the passing of your dear Mother, Mary Jess. She was a force to be reckoned with in all matters of educational leadership and life lessons. Never at a loss for words or wise advice she nurtured those around her with great love, kindness and good humour. While she is at peace now in her eternal home, we hope you will always feel her loving spirit and presence with you. Mary Jess and I shared many great times, and common interests during our many years together on School Brds. Her concern was always for the betterment of education in NS, and for the individual student. She was a tireless worker. Not knowing she had passed, just today I recalled a particular cake which she had made and brought to a provincial meeting--always thinking of others! I am pleased that I had been able to talk to her a couple of times in the past few months. She will be in my thoughts. Marg Forbes

To Dwayne and all the MacDonald Family, I was sorry to hear the news about Mary Jess. She certainly made an impact on the education of many students in the area. My favorite memory is with a group including Jim and I and my wheelchair going on a sleigh ride one snowing evening. Of course the drivers were Mary Jess and Eddie. May time ease the pain of her passing but not erase the happy memories of her life. Sincerely, Rilla McLean

Sincere condolences is passed along to the entire MacDonald family on the passing of Mary Jess. Their is little doubt that MJ was a lifelong educator and lived the life as a life long learner. An advocate for all children - it was an honour to watch her carry out the many roles she took on in education in our province. Her passing leaves a large void in your family. She is no doubt looking down with a sparkle in her eye - reunited with family and friends as she organizes whatever needs to be looked after - be it a play or a sleigh ride.

Her work in Education as a teacher and then later as Chair of the School Board was one of the many ways she served.
