It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Donald Cecil "Donnie Mac" MacPherson of Port Hawkesbury. He died in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Monday, May 23, 2022 after a brief illness. Don was born in New Waterford and grew up in South Bar. He moved to Port Hawkesbury in 1961 to work at Nova Scotia Pulp Limited, where he worked for 37 years as a Lab Technician. He loved Port Hawkesbury and worked hard as a volunteer in his community for many years. He was a member of St. Mark's United Church serving on the Board, singing in the choir and being a member of St. Mark's Men's Club. He was a member of Lion's International for 50 years where he rose to the position of Secretary to District Governor of District 41N2. He held every position and enjoyed hard work and many fun times with his fellow Lions. He was also a member of SACCC, served as President for several years and turned his hand to help with whatever was needed. Minor hockey, Ringette and the Food bank were just a few other places where he donated his time. Donnie Mac loved life and was always a perfect gentleman in all things, with a big smile and a good work for everyone! He and Jean travelled to many foreign places and visited her home in England many times. He is survived by his wife, Jean (Ashmore) of 57 years; his daughter, Susan Lee; and son, Mark (Nicole); his beloved grandchildren, Hope, Noah and Ella. He also leaves behind his sister, Elinor Grandy; brother, Terry (Susan) and sister-in-law, Susan Harrower; brother-in-law, George MacLeod and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Lee and Cecil MacPherson; sister, Jeannie MacLeod and nephew, Greg MacLeod. Visitation will be held in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury on Monday, June 6, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral service will take place in St. Mark's United Church, Port Hawkesbury on Tuesday, June 7, at 2 p.m. with reception to follow at the Strait of Canso Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Kidney Foundation or St. Mark's United Church.
