AVERY, Callis — 91, Port Hood, died peacefully Friday, January 21, 2011, in the Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, in Halifax, surrounded by his children. Born August 2, 1919, in Larry's River, Guysborough Co., he was a son of Peter Hubert and Mary (Pellerine) Avery. Callis was a decorated Merchant Marine, serving in the Second World War and Korean War. He spent many years as a seafarer and then as a painter and carpenter. He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine (Fraser) Avery; brothers, John, Robert, Joseph, Leonard, and Daniel; and sisters, Anita (Askew), Sabina, and Margaret. He will be dearly missed by his sisters, Helen Fennessey, Loretta Richard, and Anna Richard; by his children, Michael (Cathy), Daniel (Angela), Susan (Brian) MacDougall, Donald (Judy), Anita (Ken) Dwyer, Leonard (Jane), Margaret Rose (Don) Stewart, Mary Ida (Garth) Hanna, Loretta (Brian) MacDonald. He is survived by his 27 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Special thanks to the staff of 5 East, Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, QEII, for providing patient and compassionate care during his stay. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, January 24 in Port Hood & Area Resting Place. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 25 in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Port Hood, with Father Vincent van Zutphen officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Port Hood & Area Resting Place. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Homes Ltd., Port Hawkesbury.
