Margaret "Peggy" Adams
1914 – 2019
Margaret "Peggy" Evelyn MacDonald Adams passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 16, 2019 in the Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s, Cape Breton, at the age of 104 years. Peggy was born on June 24, 1914 in Barra Head, Cape Breton. She was the last surviving member of seven children born to William Augustine MacDonald and Bessie McKenzie MacDonald.
Peggy lost her mother tragically at a very young age. She, along with her brothers and sisters, were cared for by the kind people of St. Peter’s and surrounding area. After some difficult years, Peggy and her sister Anna were lovingly accepted into the home of John Allan MacDonald and Jessie Campbell MacDonald. Peggy lived there until she entered the Richmond Villa in St. Peter’s. For 25 years, Peggy was the Chief Operator for MT&T running the St. Peter’s office. This did not stop her from getting involved in the community, working with organizations such as: Canadian Red Cross, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, Royal Canadian Legion Br. 47, Canadian Kidney Society, Canadian Girl Guides, St. Peter’s home and School Community Club, Catholic Altar Society, Bonnie Brae Senior Club. On Remembrance Day, she never failed to show up dressed in her Ladies Auxiliary Branch Beret and carrying her husband Jack’s medals on a pillow, and would lay a wreath on his grave.
She will be dearly remembered for her love of music and her ability to bring the room alive playing the piano. If she wasn’t playing the lively Inverness Gathering, it may have been the beautiful Telephone Waltz. For many years, she spent time accompanying the Catholic Church Choir during Sunday Mass. Often she would hold choir practice in her home. We can’t forget the Scottish Ceilidh held in her home with musicians like the great Buddy MacMaster, Winston "Scotty" Fitzgerald, Simon Cremo, Theresa and Marie MacLellan as well as her brothers. Peggy accompanying them on the piano.
She and her husband Jack raised a family of seven children. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jack (1986) and her six brothers, Jack, Rannie, Harold, Percy, Fredrick, Walter and two sisters, Beatrice and her baby sister, Anna.
She is survived by a large and extended family who will remember her for her kindness and warm personality. This includes 7 children, John Adams (Valerie); Mary Adams (Brian McA’Nulty); Sylvia Coutu (Marcel); Jessie O’Handley (Steve - deceased); James Adams (Barbara); Margaret Romkey (Brian – deceased); Marian (Edward) Tobin; grandchildren, Cynthia Coutu, Stephanie Coutu, Sean Adams (Tara), Robert "Rob" Adams, Bruce O’Handley (Tina), Laurie Adams (Michael Choi), Christopher "Chris" Adams (Marcia), Nathalie Findlay (Jonathan), Brian O’Handley (Leah Adams), Steven Adams, Kelly Adams (Brian), Nicholas Tobin (Kirsten), Tessa MacDonnell (Keith), Shannon Mac A’Nulty, Marc Romkey, Amy Khoury (Rabih); step-grandchildren, Matthew Robinson (Cora Woolsey), Christie Kozier; great-grandchildren, Jackson Adams, Isabella Hemmings, Lucy MacDonnell, Mackenzie Adams, Madison Adams, Murphy Grimes, Ruby MacDonnell, Scotia O’ Handley, Montgomery Grimes, Stephen O’Handley, Cordelia Findlay, Ferris Grimes, Eli Khoury; step-great-grandchildren, Ethan Adams, Colby Adams, Dylan Adams, Jonathan Booth Tobin, Isabelle Kozier, Katelyn Adams, William Kozier, Madilyn Kozier, Tigh Robinson; nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to mention individually.
