Leo Thomas Cleary Obituary

CLEARY, Leo Thomas - 74, Guysborough, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 3, 2026, in the Guysborough memorial Hospital with family by his side. Born in Antigonish, he was the son of the late Gregory and Clara (Downey) Cleary.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Mona; brothers, Owen, Duane, Brian, Jack and David; sisters, Gwen and Eva in infancy.

He is survived by his son, Travis (Natalie); sisters, Auldeen, Marilyn (Blake), Sharon (Scott), Grace (Louie), Cathy (Dave), Paulette (Charlie); brother, Jerome; sister-in-law, Pheboe; brother-in-law, Larry; many nieces and nephews and cousins.

Leo obtained his Journeyman Plumber license at a young age, a trade he loved and worked at for many years. He was a longtime member of Local 244 Plumbers Union, Antigonish. His employment took him to various construction sites across Canada, starting at Point La Pro, NB and then onto Western Canada. He returned to Guysborough where he was self-employed for a number of years until his health failed. Whether it was a friend, or a neighbour with plumbing issues, Leo was always there, tools in hand and ready to help.

Leo believed in living a simple life. He had a passion for fishing, enjoyed a competitive game of crib, relaxing with a cold beverage while cheering on the Blue Jays, or sharing old stories that brought laughter and memories to everyone around him.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the Guysborough Memorial Hospital for the exceptional care, compassion and comfort they provided to Leo throughout his illness.

A special thanks to the Palliative Care Nurse, Allison Nickerson and all the home support workers who made it possible for him to stay at home until his two final days.

The family would also like to express their sincere thanks to Leo's friend, Greta. Your kindness, daily visits and unwavering support created a friendship Leo truly valued.

Special appreciation is extended to cousin Dianne for her many phone calls and visits. These visits always came with the best of baked goods, books and a caring listening ear.

To honour Leo's request, cremation has taken place with no services being held. Burial of ashes at a later date. The family takes comfort knowing he is at peace, forever in their hearts.
