Frederick ‘Fred’ Chafe

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Frederick ‘Fred’ Chafe on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, NS.  Fred was born in St. John’s NL, December 24, 1964, to the late Norman and Mary (Ryan) Chafe.

He worked as a safety advisor for Alstom for many years, then went Voith and final worked for GE. Having worked in many places in the country. Fred was a proud Newfoundlander and a die-hard Toronto Maple Leaf’s fan. Fred was an amazing family man; he was loved by all who knew him. Fred always said if he had a son, he would like him to be like Clyde, who always called him “Daddy”.

Fred leaves to mourn his loving wife, Margaret ‘Margie’ (MacRae) Chafe; his daughter, Victoria Chafe (Anthony Sears), Fred called her “Googles”. He is loving remembered by his sisters, Laura (Wally) Collins, Roslyn (Bob Tracey), Margaret, Roxanne (Melvin Mouland), Kimberly (Pernell Mouland); his brothers, Gerald (Eva), Ronnie, David, Norman (Jacqueline), and Carl; stepchildren, Chad, Clyde (Virginia), Miranda (Joel), Step grandchildren, Sophie, Sadie, Thomas and Leo, known to Fred as “Poppy”.  Who he loved with all his Heart from day one. Many nieces and nephews.

Brothers-in-law, special to his heart, Adam MacRae, Wally MacRae and Rocky MacRae.  “Go Leaf’s Go”. Special sister-in-law, Evelyn MacRae, who was his favourite, singer and will be playing at his celebration of life.

Special friends and Newfoundland childhood buddy’s, Dwayne Walsh, Donnie Squires, Jerome Richards and his Cape Breton buddy, Andrew Cogswell.

Beside his parents, Fred is predeceased by his brothers, Robert, Kevin, and Dougie; sister-in-law, Maureen; special nephew, Corey Collins.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, March 19, 2026 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville St., Port Hawkesbury.  

To honor Fred’s memory a Celebration of Life will also be held in Newfoundland, at a later date.
