SMITH, Capt. Philip Francis "Phil" – Age 93, Mulgrave, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born on September 14, 1932, in Jacques Fontaine, NL, he was the son of the late Theodore and Elsie (Johnson) Smith.
Phil fished until the late 1970’s and then went to work for the Canadian Coast Guard at the Canso Canal working as a lockmaster remaining with them until he retired in 1998. Phil acquired his Master Fishing Ticket and could have went wherever, but he chose to stay in Mulgrave. He was a resident of Mulgrave since the mid 1950’s. He was neighbourhood repairman for all, always lending a helping hand.
Surviving are his son, Calvin Smith, Afton Station; grandsons, Maxwell (Mandy) Smith, Afton Station; Jesse (Melissa), Edmonton, AB; granddaughter, Miranda, Valley, NS; great-grandchildren, Sophia and Mia. He was predeceased by his son, Philip; daughter, Marlene; brother, Calvin “Ted” Smith.
Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Melford United Church Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
