Shirley Olden Greencorn, 83, of Canso, NS passed away peacefully in Guysborough Memorial Hospital on Monday, February 23, 2026, with her loved ones by her side. Born in Halifax, on July 9, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Leona George.
Shirley was a well-known member of her community, volunteering with many organizations such as the Breakfast Program for students at Fanning Education Centre, as well as with the residents of the Canso Seaside Manor. She was a member of the Canso Ladies Auxiliary, as well as a life-long member of the All Saint’s Anglican Church.
There was nothing “Nanny Shirl” couldn’t knit and she could often be found in her chair, sipping a cup of tea, making hats, mitts or quilts for her many grand or great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her brothers, Freeman and Percy; sister, Nina; as well as her son, Laurie and her daughter, Leona.
She is survived by her daughters, Della (Frank), Mary (Manford), Shirley (Dave), all of Canso, and Leah (Diane) of Truro; brothers, Gordon (Noreen) and Jerry (Heather), Canso; sisters, Pamela (Tony, New Waterford, Freda, Ontario, Laurena, Enfield and sister-in-law, Marie George, Guysborough; grandchildren, Shauna, Josh (Terrilyn), Matthew (Paige), Patrick (Nicole), Keyona (Shane), Dylan, Jessica (Josh), Tyson (Cassidy), Sheldon (Mandi), and Rayanne (Morgan); many great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; as well as special friends, Donna Casey, Margie Horne, Sharon Horne and Suzanne Horne Tuuramo.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to all the doctors and nurses at the Guysborough Memorial Hospital for the wonderful care they provided for Shirley, and the compassion they showed her family during a very difficult time.
Cremation has taken place, and as per Shirley’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Funeral service will take place at the All Saint’s Anglican Church at a later date.
