Denyse Marthe Brothers (née Belanger) passed away peacefully on Friday, January 30, 2026, at the age of 97 at Parkland on the Gardens in Halifax.
Born on January 30,1929 in Chicoutimi Quebec, Denyse was the beloved wife of James Alfred Brothers, and a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother
She was pre-deceased by her parents Rene and Marcelle (Trepanier) Belanger, husband, James Alfred Brothers, brother Guy Belanger, sons Dr. Michael Francis Brothers, Dr. Peter John Brothers and grandson Daniel Ishmael Brothers. She is survived by her brothers Dr. Gilles and Dr. Jacques Belanger, sons Kenneth (Cheryl) Brothers, Gregory Brothers (Farah Baksh) and daughter-in law Dr. Cathy Shea
Grand-children Adrian, Joseph (Tehi Billon-Lanfrey) and Dr. Thomas (Lindsay Wallace) Brothers and great-grandchildren Simen, Teddy, Violette and Charles Brothers and many nieces and nephews.
Denyse grew up in Chicoutimi and later went to school in Quebec at Laval, then on to Marygrove College in Detroit, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in mathematics. She returned to Chicoutimi where she met Fred and were later married there. After living in Chalk River, Ont. and Trenton Michigan, she and the family returned to Dartmouth in 1966 with four boys. She decided to return to university and obtained her Bachelor of Education then went directly to teaching French at Dartmouth High, St. Peter’s Jr. High and later Prince Andrew High School for the next 23 years. She enjoyed her many colleagues and students during that time and the Europe school trips. She loved her summers on Caribou Island and the beaches, and after retirement she drove frequently to Florida for many winter months.
She had a passion for piano, music, restaurants and the theatre and was an accomplished and competitive Bridge player. She often played the organ at St. Peter’s church mass in the late 60’s and early 1970s.
Denyse had a full energetic life, filled with music, arts, extensive travel and could never turn down a good road trip. She was loved by the people she touched and will be lovingly remembered by extended family and friends
