John Grant MacInnis Obituary

John Grant MacInnis passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026. Born on August 10, 1962, in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, John was the son of the late Allister MacInnis and Isobelle (Murray) MacInnis.

John was predeceased by his brothers, Angus “Ernie,” Murray, and David; his sister, Sharon; and his sister-in-law, Sandra MacPhie. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Mary; his daughter, Sandra (Brian), whom he proudly called his “little dude”; his brothers, Leslie MacPhie and Alexander “Dank” (Carol Anne); his sisters, Irene (Francis) and Averill (Ian); his sister-in-law, Kelly; his brother-in-law, Johannes; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends.

John led a quiet, grounded life on his property, where he found great joy in nature. He especially enjoyed watching birds and deer, tending his gardens alongside Mary, and working the woodlots on his various properties—always ensuring the family was well supplied with firewood. His connection to the land was a defining part of who he was.

In earlier years, John loved fishing, boating, and camping throughout Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. He also enjoyed live music and road trips to rock concerts in Moncton, New Brunswick, appreciating everything from classic rock to country music, with the occasional fiddle tune thrown in.

John was immensely proud of his daughter, Sandra, and raised her to be strong, independent, and spirited—traits he admired deeply, along with her unmistakable red hair. Known for his remarkable hands-on abilities, John could fix just about anything. This practical skill served him well throughout his life and was often shared generously with others. He shared a special bond with his brother, Dank, spending countless hours talking on the phone and making trips to town together for coffee at McDonald’s.

A natural conversationalist, John could talk for hours with anyone about a wide range of topics, including local history, politics, the weather, and the natural world. He spent many years working in the woods with MacInnis Surveys, cutting lines and working closely alongside Calder. Earlier in his career, he was employed with City Parks in Calgary.

John enjoyed having company and was known for his hospitality—especially his delicious homemade blueberry pie, which many will fondly remember. John will be deeply missed by all who knew him and remembered for his quiet strength, curiosity, generosity, and love of family and nature. A Celebration of Life will be held at the West Bay Community Centre, 2048 Cenotaph Road, on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend and share in remembering John. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Bay Community Association. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
