GUTHRO, Theresa Marjorie - Age 97, Auld's Cove. We the family regret to announce the death of our Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Theresa Marjorie Guthro on Saturday, November 8, 2025. Born June 14, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Simon and Hattie (Delorey) Mattie of Mattie Settlement.
Mom grew up on the family farm in Mattie Settlement surrounded by a strong family and where she was strengthened by her Christian faith that was to sustain her throughout her life. Mom worked hard throughout the changes of the seasons and she also shared in the fun that the seasons allowed. Having met the love of her life, Joseph Simon Guthro, they lived their early years in Mattie Settlement before making the move to Auld's Cove where they operated Guthro's Grocery. Although Dad was out front in the store, Mom was the wonderful presence that welcomed all she met and she made everyone feel special. Mom was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Mulgrave and also a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Women's League for 56 years.
She loved to play cards, especially welcoming the gang on Friday evenings and attending card games. We cannot imagine Mom without knitting needles in her hands making socks and mittens for family, friends and the community. Her life was lived in faith through the rosary, a lit candle and attending Mass. We especially appreciated the care and compassion shown to Mom by family and friends, especially Sharon and Anna Burton who visited her on a daily basis with a cup of tea and lunch.
Mom leaves behind to mourn her death her sons, Joseph, Auld's Cove; Deacon Berkley (Jessie), Port Hawkesbury; Charles (late Carola), Eastern Passage; Anthony, John, Mike (Debbie), Auld's Cove; 8 grandchildren, Jason (Tammy), Jennifer (Raymond), Alexander (Kara), Dennis, Ashley (Darren), Shelby, Evan, Lacey; 13 great-grandchildren, Matthew (Matty), Olivia, Kinslie, Easton, Macy, Landen, Emmett, Lakyn, Ally, Tegan, Trinity, Colton, Vincent.
Theresa is also survived by her sister, Dora (Clarence) MacDonald, Auld's Cove; daughter-in-law, Norma Guthro, Evanston and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; brothers, Berkley (Louise), Walter (Theresa), Russell (Ruth); sisters, Kathleen (Victor), Josephine (Edward); a daughter in infancy.
A special thank you to the staff of the RK MacDonald Nursing Home. Your care and compassion is greatly appreciated over the years that Mom was in her new home in Thistledown.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 12 from 2-8 p.m. in the Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Mass of Christian Burial will be from St. Lawrence Church, Mulgrave on Thursday, November 13 at 11 a.m. with Father Conrad Edwards officiating, assisted by Father Allan MacPhie. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow the burial in the Mulgrave Fire Hall hosted by the St. Lawrence CWL.
