Pearl M. Grant

Manchester, Guysborough Co.

Memories are the timeless treasure of the heart and we will always treasure the memories of our mother, Pearl Grant, who left us on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at the age of 87 after a lengthy battle with cancer, which she fought with strength, determination, grace and a positive attitude. Mom was born on May 2, 1938 in Canso, NS to Frederick and Eileen (Fanning) Horton.

Mom was very loved and will be greatly missed by her children, Juanita (George), Kevin, Ken (Jennifer), Janet (Tony) and Paul. Grandchildren, Rob (Linda), Melissa (Bob), Travis (Kayla), Bailey (Hannah), Alex, Trevor (Jaylene), Grant (Teah), Haley (Latham), Greg (Taeko), Daniel, Devin, Emily (Colton), Elliott. Great Grandchildren, Joshua, Noah, Olivia, Sara, Cody, Collins, McCoy, Carson, Makennley, Benson, John, Hadley, Corey and Kara. Special Friends, Jean, Cathy, Linda and Catherine.

Her furry friends, Lydi, Sterling and Breezy. Our mom was the oldest of 12 brothers and sisters, Fred (Evangeline), St. Catherines, Ont.; Thomas (Linda), Middle Musquodoboit, NS; Lillian (John), Nickerson Canso, NS; David (Maria), Halifax, NS; Helen (Thomas), Larrys River, NS; Muriel Bousquet Montreal, PQ; Stanley, Truro, NS, Robert (Cathy), Truro, NS; Sister-in-law, Rita; Brother-in-law, Bob MacPhee; Sister-in-law, Penny Horton. Aunt and dear friend Molly (Bruce), St. Catherines, Ont. As well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Along with her parents and husband, Elliott, mom was predeceased by her grandsons, Jonathan Wood, Graham Grant and Stephen Cunningham and her brothers, Percy, Nelson and Maxwell along with sister-in-law and brother-in-law, June and Sam Stirling and sister-in-law, Ardella (Dee-Dee) MacPhee and sister-in-law, Jean Horton, sister-in-law, Doris Horton and brother-in-law, Denis Bousquet.

Our mom left Canso at the age of 17 to train for her career as an LPN at the old Guysborough Memorial Hospital. The highlight of her career was working with the residents of Hazel Hill Rest Home and Milford Haven Home for Special Care in Guysborough where she was loved and respected by both the residents and their families.

Mom was devoted to her family. She loved when we were all together for a big meal. She always found something to laugh about, sometimes at our expense. Mom enjoyed travelling, especially to Alberta to visit her grandchildren and to Ontario to visit family. She enjoyed a good cup of tea with family and friends and flowers or “arlies”, as our brother Kevin called them. Mom had an adventurous side, whether it was going out on Tony and Janet’s boat or hopping on the back of a snowmobile to go to the camp.

She was up to try anything, at least once. She taught us to be resilient and to enjoy life especially if the day ended with a beautiful sunset. She brought us up with quiet strength and a sense of humour. Her Love for her children, and their children never wavered, and she taught us, by example, how to love ourselves and others.

We would like to thank Dr. Lawlor, Dr. Che, Dr. Rice, Palliative Care Nurse, Allison Nickerson and the Home Care nurses for their compassionate care of our mom during her illness.

Cremation has already taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday November 15, 2025, at 11 a.m. in the Boylston United Church on 1005 East Side Harbor Road, with Rev. Heather Manuel officiating.
