Randall Dexter Ehler Obituary

Randall Dexter Joesph Ehler (Randy) November 12, 1960 – October 24, 2025

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Randall (Randy) Dexter Joesph Ehler, age 64, on Friday, October 24, 2025. Born and raised in Halifax, Randy made Cape Breton his home after moving there in 1980 — lucky for us, as that’s where he met the love of his life, Beverly, his wife and best friend of 26 years. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised two remarkable daughters who were the light of his world.

Randy was born on November 12, 1960, to Denton and Christine Ehler. He will be forever loved and deeply missed by his wife, Beverly; his daughters, Candice Rayann (Hunter) and Mya Faith, who admired him deeply and will forever treasure the countless cherished memories of their devoted father. He is also survived by his mother, Christine Ehler; his brother, Denton (Janet) Ehler; his mother-in-law, Beatrice MacLeod; his sister-in-law, Tracy (Shawn) Malcolm; and his nieces and nephews, Tammy, Ryan (Danielle), Cassie (Brent), Logan (Mickayla), and Lauchie (Briana). He was predeceased by his father, Denton Ehler; his brother, Arthur Ehler; his father-in-law, Robert MacLeod; and his dear cousin, Owen Dermody, whom he lovingly called his “little buddy.”

For over 25 years, Randy proudly drove a school bus — a job he loved and one that allowed him to brighten the day of countless students (and keep them laughing along the way). Some of his favourite drives were the early 6:30 a.m. runs with his daughter, Mya, starting the day together with Tim Hortons and a song. He also spent countless weekends at the hockey rink with Candice, proudly cheering her on as her biggest fan. When he wasn’t behind the wheel of the bus, he could often be found under the hood of a car, helping someone out of a jam. Whether it was towing a car in the middle of the night, or plowing a friend’s driveway, Randy was always there when someone needed a hand — usually with a smile, a joke, and a story to tell.

Randy spent countless hours with his brothers, Denton and Arthur, in the garage, working on cars or driving buses side by side. The three of them were rarely apart — always together, often arguing, but never without laughter and always having each other’s backs. Those noisy, good-natured debates and shared projects were some of Randy’s happiest times. He also loved being out on the water — fearless, carefree, and always chasing the next adventure.

A true jack-of-all-trades, Randy wore many hats: mechanic, bus driver, tow truck operator, handyman, and most importantly, a friend you could always count on. Randy had an unmatched sense of humour. You never sat with him long before he had you laughing — whether with a quick one-liner, a funny story, or that mischievous grin that told you he was about to say something you’d never forget. Beneath that humour was a heart full of love and generosity. He never asked for much and never put himself first; his world revolved around his family, especially his girls, who were the heart of his world and his greatest joy.

Randy will be remembered as a hardworking, selfless, and loyal man — the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back, the last of his time, and the best of his heart. His spirit, laughter, and love for life will carry on in the memories of those lucky enough to have known him. Though our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the 64 years we had with this extraordinary man.

Rest easy, Randy. Your work here is done — and it was done beautifully.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh.
