Morton Walter Keirstead Obituary

Morton Keirstead

Port Hawkesbury and Advocate Harbour, Nova Scotia

It is with deep sadness that the family of Morton Keirstead announce his passing on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Strait Richmond Hospital, at the age of 89. Born in New Salem, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Clement and Berna Keirstead.

Morton graduated from the Nova Scotia Normal College and McGill University, beginning his teaching career in Apple River and Spencer’s Island, Nova Scotia. He later became principal in Stanstead, Quebec, and it was during his time in Mont Apica, Quebec, that he met Anne (née Ogilvie), his beloved wife of 62 years. Morton went on to serve as principal in several schools in Aylmer and Hull, Quebec, before retiring in 1990 as Director of Elementary Education for the Western Quebec School Board. Following retirement, he accepted a position as Director of the International School in Havana, Cuba, where he formed many lasting friendships with colleagues and students alike.

He and Anne retired to Wolfville, Nova Scotia, in 1999, where they enjoyed many happy years. In 2019, they moved to The Maples in Antigonish, and more recently to Port Hawkesbury.

Morton was a respected and fair educator, known for his dedication to his students and his steady leadership. He loved tinkering in his workshop, repairing equipment, and had a lifelong interest in antique cars. He also enjoyed cooking family meals, bringing everyone together around the table. A devoted Toronto Blue Jays fan, he rarely missed a game. He cherished time spent with family, especially at the family cottage in Advocate Harbour, and was an avid bridge player who enjoyed the camaraderie of the game as much as the competition.

He is survived by his wife, Anne; daughter, Stephanie (Sheldon) of Port Hawkesbury; son, Stephen (Julie) of Vars, Ontario; and grandchildren Rory (Gracie), Molly, Shamus, and Connor. He is also survived by his sisters Pearle Timmons (Wilson) of West Bay, Nova Scotia, and Connie Ells (Brian) of Advocate Harbour, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Morton was predeceased by his sister Nancy May (in infancy) and brother Rod.

A funeral service and reception will be held on Saturday, November 8, at 2:00 p.m. at the Advocate United Church, Advocate Harbour.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Strait Richmond Hospital, The Maples Supportive Living in Antigonish, and the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home for their care and compassion.

Donations in Morton’s memory may be made to the Advocate Cemetery Fund or charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
