Captain Bernard Alfred 'Fred' Gurney Obituary

Captain Bernard Alfred “Fred” Gurney

Canso, NS

Captain Fred Gurney of Canso passed away Sunday, October 5, 2025 in Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso. Born in Canso, he was the son of the late Irvin and Gladys (Casey) Gurney.

He is survived by his loving wife, Pauline “Polly” (Munroe); his son, Bernard; sisters, Valerie (Donald) MacKenzie; Sandra (Eugene) Newell; sisters-in-law, Louise, Linda, Marg, Phyllis and Donna; 26 nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents Fred was predeceased by his brothers, Arnold, Russell, Milton, Paul, Murray, Wayne; sister-in-law, Juanita.

Fred started fishing at the age of 15, he loved it and loved to eat it. He was a quiet man but had a very dry sense of humor. His family was always his priority. His son was truly his life.

His last 12 years were rough, but he would say ‘don’t worry it is what it is’, he took life so easy, and you’ll be ok was his saying.

Cremation has taken place, burial at a later date.

To Dr. Milburn, Thank You. We know that you do it for all, but Fred and his family were very grateful. To the nurses you did an awesome job.

Donations in memory of Fred may be made to Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso.

Arrangements are under the care of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
