Gordon Harmer
Harmer, Gordon Keith - 93 of Guysborough passed away on September 13th at the Milford Haven Home for Special Care where he resided for the last 6 years. Gordon was born in Stroud, Gloucestershire England on August 29, 1932, the only child of Redvers and Elsie Harmer.
Gordon served in the British Army, Welsh Regiment 1950-52 of which 11 months he served in the Korean War. Gordon started his career as a Journalist and in Public Relations having worked in both Northampton and London, England.
Gordon was Chief Press Officer and Publicity Manager for Industrial and Trade Fair Limited in London which led him to Publicity Manager of the World Fishing Exhibition in Halifax which would then lead him to immigrating to Halifax in 1978. He continued his work in Public Relations and Communications as Director of Communications for the Credit Union Central of Nova Scotia and served as the Executive Director Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS) for 10 years.
Upon retirement and moving to Guysborough, Gordon volunteered in a number of organizations such as Guysborough Historical Society, Meals on Wheels, and St Ann’s Parish as a lector and serving on Parish Council.
Gordon had a passion for photography, sailing and Formula 1 Racing. His love of travel took him and Audrey to many destinations, but a favourite spot was Beautiful Barbados.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Audrey (Kennedy); sons, Andrew (Chris) and Richard (Jane); Grandchildren, Gabriella and Abigail, Jack and Harriet; Great-Granddaughter Raya, all of England.
Sisters-in-Law, Rita Kennedy and Frieda Kennedy, Guysborough. Brother-in-Law, Arthur Kennedy, Sydney. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law, Joseph, Arnold and William Kennedy.
Cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 26th at 11:00 am in St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Guysborough with Father Vincent Emezue officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in Gordon’s memory to St Ann’s Parish or a Charity of choice.
