It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our loved one Stephen, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit in Antigonish after a brief battle with cancer. Steve was the youngest of 10 children, son to the late Angus and Mary Kate (MacInnis) Howlett, West Bay Road.
Steve is survived by his wife, Marguerite (MacLean-Hendsbee) Howlett; daughter, Angie (Arnold McNamara), Kempt Rd.; Betty, mother of Angie; grandson, Zachary (Jessica); 3 great-grandchildren, Scarlett, Tia, Xavier; step-son, Shane (Natasha Snow) Hendsbee and step grandson, Ethan Hendsbee-Rankin; siblings, Christena “Tena”, West Bay Road; Bernie (Linda), Port Hawkesbury; brothers-in-law, Duncan MacLean, Halifax; Ed (Gloria) MacLean, St. John’s, NL; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Steve was predeceased by siblings, Catherine, Leo, Jackie, Donnie, Mary, Florence and John.
Steve loved his family dearly, and all the phone calls proved that. Steve worked for 40 years for Best Wall, later known as Georgia Pacific, operating heavy equipment. He made many friends along the way, his story telling was amazing, he could make you believe almost all were true.
We the family would like to thank the Palliative Care team from Strait Richmond and Antigonish that made Steve’s journey and ours so much easier, the care and compassion he received was totally amazing. Dr. Gillis and Kyla and all the others are worth their weight in gold.
Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Sunday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Monday from St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury with Father Joby Augustin officiating and assisted by Deacon Berkley Guthro. Cremation will follow with a private family burial in St. Margaret’s Parish Cemetery, West Bay Road at a later date. A reception will follow the funeral mass in the church hall.
Family flowers only please and if so desired, memorial donations may be made to St. Margaret’s Cemetery Fund, Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society or St. Martha’s Palliative Care, Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of one’s choice.
