Hughie James MacEachern Obituary

In loving Memory of Hughie James MacEachern

Craigmore, Nova Scotia

October 23, 1941 - July 22, 2025

With deep sorrow, the family of Hughie James MacEachern announces his peaceful passing, surrounded by family, at the age of 83 on July 22, 2025.

Born to Angus Dougall and Christy (nee MacNeil) MacEachern, Hughie built a life rooted in love, humor, and unwavering devotion. He shared 56 cherished years of marriage with his beloved wife, Alice, together raising a close-knit and loving family in the home he built in Craigmore, Nova Scotia.

He was a proud father to Bob, Cockscomb Lake; Rick (Melanie), Lloydminster and Colleen (Terynn), Cole Harbour. His legacy lives brightly through his grandchildren: Kristen, Ally, Katelyn, Chelsea and the memory of his grandson, Drew, whose absence Hughie felt deeply.

Hughie dedicated over three decades to Stora Forest Industries, and his passion for the outdoors found its rhythm lobster fishing along the shores of Craigmore. A storyteller at heart, he could often be found holding court at Tim Hortons, coffee in hand, recounting spirited tales filled with local lore and endless charm. He had a special knack for knowing not just everyone's name - but whose father, and father's father, came before.

His civic pride shone through his years as president of the Ceilidh Trail, tirelessly working to complete the scenic route from Port Hastings to Long Point. Hughie generously lent his time to Tim Hortons Camp Day, a cause that held special meaning for him. In retirement, Hughie and Alice chased sunshine and fairways, golfing in Guysborough and wherever the open road invited them. He found quiet joy spending many hours tending horses for his friend, Joe Janega - another way he stayed connected to the land and community he loved.

He is lovingly remembered by his siblings and extended family, whose lives he deeply touched: Alex Dan (Betty), Bill, Jerry (Helena), Almira O'Brien, Doug (Glenda), and Angus (Marion).

Hughie was predeceased by his cherished grandson, Andrew (Drew); beloved parents, Angus Dougall and Christy; brothers, Dougald, Angus Beaton, Johnny, Josie, and Stevie; sisters, Theresa, Mary-Belle, Elizabeth, and Aneas; sisters-in-law, Elaine, Rose, Helen, and Valerie; and brothers-in-law, Art Proctor, Frank Cabay, Jimmy MacEachern, and Bernie Smith.

A man of strength, heart, and laughter, Hughie's memory will live on in the stories he told, the roads he built, the puzzles he completed, and the countless lives he touched. Known for his quick wit and never one to shy away from a clever comment, Hughie had a knack for lighting up conversations with humor that lingered long after the laughter faded.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home for their compassionate care and support.
