Geraldine 'Deanie' Thelma White Obituary

Deanie White, 91, of Port Hawkesbury died at home on Friday, July 18, 2025, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her children and loved ones. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Florence (Rigby) Fleming. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

After her first thirty-seven years in New Waterford, Deanie and her family moved to Port Hawkesbury in 1970. She worked for the Cape Breton Post for almost twenty years as a Circulation Manager for western Cape Breton. She was an avid fan of all sports, but most fond of tennis, curling and hockey. Mom a world traveller, taking many trips with Art and her friends. She was always ready to “hit the road” and when asked to go somewhere, she would “never say no”. She enjoyed walking on the waterfront boardwalk, attending ALL the concerts and going to town!

Mom was a long-time parishioner of St. Joseph’s Parish, sang in the choir for many years as well as volunteered many hours with the Ladies Guild. She found great satisfaction and fulfillment assisting the church in her various roles. She also volunteered many hours of her time serving her community.

Surviving are daughters, Marilyn (Michael) of Whiteside, Judy (Richard) of Port Hastings, Sandra (Wayne) of Port Hawkesbury and her son Ross (Joanne) of Dieppe, NB. Deanie was blessed to have nine grandchildren, Evan, Michelle, Lisa, Jillian, Alan, Leah, Cyndal, Danica and Brandon, as well as sixteen great-grandchildren, Noah, Neriah, Devlun, Olivia, Dillon, Vada, Jace, Lincoln, Lexi, Elise, Jamison, Colin, Seamus, Tessa, Louis and Samuel. She will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews whom she deeply adored and many wonderful neighbors and friends.

Besides her parents, Deanie was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Arthur (2021), and her siblings, Dennis, Mildred, Cyril, Bernadette, Marilyn and Thomas.

The family would like to thank the following people and groups for their wonderful, compassionate and professional care given to Mom during her illness: Palliative Care, Dr. Lisa Gillis and Nurse Kyla Mackeigan, Dr. Giacomantonio, Dr. Wagle, all of the Continuing Care nurses, the Inverness County Home Support Society workers and staff at Walmart Pharmacy. We were truly impressed by the level of services and kindness our Mother received.

As per Deanie’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service, cremation has taken place under the direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. A private graveside service will take place for immediate family. No flowers or donations please. Deanie simply requested that you do a nice deed to someone.
