John William Mooring Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we, the family of John William Mooring, announce his sudden passing on July 1, 2025 in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Martha's Regional Hospital.

Born in Antigonish, he was the youngest son of the late Roland and Myrtle (Crittenden) Mooring. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 35 years, Laureen (O'Halloran) and son Reilly, Halifax, NS; sisters, Marion "Jackie" (Horace Welsh), Joyce (Donald Malcolm) and Joan, sisters-in-law, Patsy Mooring, Madonna Mooring, Jane (Marvin Perry), Patricia (Rob Freer), Jeneen (Richard Harrison). Forever known as "Uncle Johnny" by a large circle of nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews; Mooring and Crittenden cousins and his Mother-in-law, Ruth O'Halloran, with whom he shared a special caregiving relationship.

He was predeceased by his sister, Midge Blagdon; brothers, Ralston "Sonny" and Roland "Butch"; sister Verna Jean in infancy, brother-in-law, Walter Crant, nephew Harvey Malcolm and sister-in-law, Michelle O'Halloran, father-in-law, Earle O'Halloran.

Johnny was a lifelong resident of Mulgrave and he spend over 4 decades dedicated to his job at the Mill. He valued the sense of camaraderie with many coworkers over those 45 years and when asked about retirement, his answer was simple, "I'll know when it's time". A long time member of Unifor Local 972 he followed the company from Stora Forest Industries through to his last back shift May 17th for Port Hawkesbury Paper Ltd.

Days prior to his passing, Johnny was quoted as saying "I have lived a good life". He embraced his diagnosis with incredible courage and even humour in his last days, preparing for his journey. While Johnny leaves behind a huge void, he will be remembered for his kind and generous nature, the guy who always took the time, if only a minute, to stop and talk. He spent countless hours tinkering in his garage up on the hill, and if you noticed the door open, you were welcome to drop in for a chat and chances are he might have a drink of Crown Royal to offer. Johnny would say he lived a simple life, enjoying his hobbies such as deer hunting, fishing, golfing, family card gatherings and darts at the Legion. He was always up for a game of pool with the boys. He played ball on various teams but his greatest joy was snowmobiling on his Polaris, cheering for the Montreal Canadiens and ensuring the "hill" looked pristine during mowing season. Lastly, he never took for granted the view from the family homestead and often spent time overlooking the beauty of the Strait.

Johnny's peaceful passing was one of quiet strength, dignity and grace and his wish was to leave behind a legacy of kindness and not to take life "too seriously". Johnny left a request that he would love for anyone to pay it forward and perform an act of kindness in his honour.

The family would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and all staff on The Palliative Care Unit, PCU and Emergency Department for the exemplary care. Special thanks to Dr. Soofi and Dr. Rice who treated Johnny with incredible warmth and compassion.

In keeping with Johnny's wishes, there will be no formal arrangements. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Homes Ltd., Port Hawkesbury.
