Knew John Wayne from childhood days in school and at the little wharf by the Island. My Dad, Tunney Betts, kept our boat there one summer. A leaky old craft that Chuckie said "that is not a boat that is a basket" John's sense of humor was fantastic and I always got a big hello when we crossed paths. All my best wishes to the family and may he be wrapped in love.

John and I went to school together. He always made me laugh and we spent a few times in the Principals Office. I've thought of him often. He will be missed. Karen Clark Wilson.

The first time we met John Wayne he was hitch hiking on the TCH. We picked him up and he began telling us he was on his way to visit his beautiful girlfriend in Chapel Island. He later married that beautiful girlfriend and we had the privilege of attending the wedding.
Years later John Wayne asked me (Phil) to drive him to the highlands to look for a moose. While we were eating a lunch that Gracie had packed for us, suddenly there was a huge moose about a half mile away. John took off with his gun blazing. His son, Bucky said, “Now there is a real John Wayne movie. “ The moose was a record size.
John Wayne was a true friend.
