Obituary of Helen Higgins Prentice
Helen H. Prentice, age 77, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 6, 2025, at the
Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney, N.S.
Born on January 3, 1948, in Greenock, Scotland, she was the daughter of Robert
and Mary (Henderson) Murphy.
On March 8, 1968, Helen married the love of her life, Thomas Millar Prentice, in
their hometown of Greenock. Soon after, the couple immigrated to Canada and
began building a life together. Their journey took them through Ontario and
Calgary, Alberta, but it wasn’t until Helen arrived in Cape Breton that she truly felt
at home.
Together, Helen and Tom raised a family, creating a life filled with love and
laughter. Helen dedicated many years to a fulfilling career as a nurse and
caregiver, known for her kindness and compassion. Later, she brought that same
heart and dedication to running a successful pizza restaurant, becoming a beloved
part of her community.
Helen is survived by her devoted husband, Tom, and their three daughters: Helen
Prentice-McIntyre (Scott) of Sydney; Irene Prentice, Costa Rica; and Jane Prentice
(Byron) of Baddeck. She was a proud and loving grandmother to four
grandchildren: Kaylee, Tommy, Ben, and Hannah.
She is also survived by her sister, Margaret (Roy) Kerrigan of Scotland, and her
many cherished nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by her brother, Robert Murphy,
also of Scotland.
To gather in remembrance and honour a life so beautifully lived, a Celebration of
Life will be held on Friday, April 11, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the upper level
