Gertrude ‘Gertie’ Evelyn Carr

Today (March 11, 2025), we sadly announce the passing of our loving Aunt Gertrude ‘Gertie’ Evelyn Carr, born June 16, 1926 to the late Howard and Eviva (Diggins) Carr of Manassette Lake, Guysborough County.

Gertie is survived by her nieces, Mary Chisholm, Hamilton, ON; Lorraine Sanford, Dartmouth;
Dianne DeCoste, Havre Boucher; Naomi DeCoste, Manassette Lake; Connie Westerdoif, BC; Carolann England, Manassette Lake; nephews, Ross Haywood, Manassette Lake; Sam Carr, Manassette Lake and Paul Nolan, Massachusetts. Special grandnephew & buddy, Tim Haywood and many grand & great nieces & nephews. She will be missed by her special friend, Mary MacKenzie.

Besides her parents Gertie is predeceased by her sisters, Helen Haywood, Ann Nolan, and Mary Hirtle; brothers, Maurice Carr, Ernest Carr, Sam Carr and two foster brothers, Richard Hayden and Andy MacIsaac.

Gertie was a resilient lady, true to her convictions, competitive in all walks of life,
loved to travel, dance (and she could dance), Christmas, curling, bingo, cards and loved her time socializing with her family and friends.

Gertie enjoyed a 35 year career with T Eaton Co., Halifax which allowed her to express her flair for fashion and modelling. Retiring in 1993 Gertie returned to her beautiful family property overlooking Chedabucto Bay and Manassette Lake to be near her sister Helen and family.

Gertie will be truly missed by all of her family and friends.

On Gertie’s behalf we would like to thank our sister in-law, Shirley Haywood for the love, personal touch, time and attention in the care she gave to our Aunt Gertie in the most recent months.

Gertie would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Guysborough Hospital for their compassion and personal touch in caring for her. A special thank you to Donna Sangster for the exceptional care to Gertie and her family.

There will be no visitation, a funeral mass will be held at a later time and will be updated on the website.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to St Francis Cemetery Fund, St. Francis Harbour.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Homes, Guysborough. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
