Obituary of Aubrey MacDonald

Please share a memory of Aubrey to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

MacDonald, A. Aubrey (88) - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dad, Aubrey MacDonald, 88, of Cleveland on Sunday, March 9th, 2025 in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in Silver Mine, he was the son of the late Norman and Florence (Arey)MacDonald.

Dad grew up on the family farm and learned early how to work hard and pitch in on all kinds of chores. He worked in lumbering for a time until he was hired by the Department of Mines and Energy as a diamond driller - a job that took him all over Nova Scotia for a number of years. After a serious back injury ended his career, he took a year off to recuperate from surgery and then began working as a greenskeeper at Dundee Resort, a job he continued to retirement.

Dad had many talents in woodworking and was able to build projects big and small, from house and barn construction to cabinetry, furniture and small carving projects. He was a die-hard Montreal Canadiens and Montreal Expos fan. He enjoyed gatherings with family and friends and a good meal followed by a nice dessert, preferably lemon pie! He enjoyed playing darts with friends at the West Bay Community Hall. Dad liked playing cards, having coffee with friends, gardening, feeding birds welcoming stray cats and enjoying nature. He preferred warm weather and happily made several winter escapes to Cuba in his later years where he also made many friends.

He is survived by his children Donalda (Martin); Bradley (Cindy) and Charlotte; granddaughter Katrina (Elliott) and great-grandchildren Hazel and Linus. He is survived by his sister Thelma; mother of his children, Eileen Burke; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Dan Alex, Gordon and Murray and sisters Margaret, Edith, Rhodena and Sarah.

Many thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital and Strait Richmond Hospital who cared for him and did things to make his days brighter during his long hospital stay. For those who dropped in to see him, know that you brought him comfort as he loved to have people come by.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 14th in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 15th from West Bay United Church with Rev. Carol Joy Shatford officiating. Reception to follow at the West Bay Community Centre. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com
