I remember my many visits to Shirley and Phonse’s home. Sonny and I played card games, board games and TV bingo. We shared many laughs and also had many political conversations. There was always a cup of tea, something homemade baked and a dish of candy or chocolate on the coffee table. Shirley was the ultimate hostess. Sincere condolences to Phonse, David Andrea and family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

We are so sorry for the loss of Shirley. Growing up,I was frequently at Phonse and Shirley’s for sleepovers with Andrea. Andrea and I spent much time going back and forth between our homes.I remember so many great times at the “cabin.”There were many laughs, fun card games, stories and more than a few cups of tea consumed when spending time with Shirley and Phonse. I have always said Shirley and Phonse were like my second parents. I truly felt blessed to be with them. We will miss her and remember her. Rest in Peace Dear Shirley. We are sending much love to Phonse, Andrea, David and their families, John,Bobby,Sally and Betty.

In Loving Memory of Miss Shirley
In 2020, during the uncertainty of the pandemic, I moved into the house across the street from Shirley and Fonz. Isolated for two weeks before I could engage with my new community, Shirley’s kindness shone through. She sent Fonz over with a care package, leaving jars of homemade jams and goodies at my front door. That thoughtful gesture was the first sign of the incredible person she was.
Over the years, Shirley became more than just a neighbour; she became family. When my mom passed away in May 2024, Shirley and Fonz stepped in to make sure I wasn’t alone during one of the hardest times of my life. Despite facing challenges with her own mobility, Shirley never hesitated to offer support—and in turn, gave me the opportunity to support her as I navigated my own grief.
It was truly an honour to get to know her. Shirley’s wit, humor, and incredible spirit brought joy to my life. I cherished the times we spent together, whether sharing stories, cooking her favorite foods, or clinking our alcohol-free beers and cheering to the small joys of life. Her love for trying new foods and her endless tales of the past, especially about the home I now live in—a house she was born in—gave me a deeper connection to my space and to her.
Even as she faced physical challenges, Shirley gave me something priceless: spiritual strength and a sense of belonging. She reminded me of the power of kindness, resilience, and connection. Though I tried to support her in any way I could, the truth is that she did far more for me than I could ever repay.
Miss Shirley, you will forever hold a special place in my heart. I will continue to talk to you as I renovate the house you knew so well. Rest peacefully, dear friend. Please give my mom a hug for me.
With love and gratitude,
Penny xo
