Ellie & Vic spent the first 29 years of their marriage in Saskatchewan and in 1970 Vic’s work brought them to Port Hawkesbury. They were warmly welcomed into the community and they embraced the new adventures of living in Cape Breton. Following the untimely death of Vic, Ellie chose to remain in Port Hawkesbury and engaged in many activities including curling, bridge, supporting the Barbershop Singers and most especially her involvement in choirs at St. Joseph’s Church and in the wider community. Ellie will long be remembered for her famous potato buns which she generously shared with everyone.
In 2001 she was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and while this was not a definitive diagnosis, it was clear that life for her was changed forever. With the generosity of her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne & Jerry Manegre, Ellie was able to remain living in her home. In addition to her family support, sincere gratitude and appreciation is extended to the exceptional homecare workers of the Inverness County Home Support Society who played a vital role in Ellie’s care and in support for Jeanne and the family. Special thanks also to the medical staff at the Strait Richmond Hospital for the compassionate, professional care they gave to Ellie.
