MUNROE, William Donald "Bill" Sr. - 82, Canso, died Friday, August 10, 2007, in Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso. Born in Whitehead, Guysborough Co., son of the late Alden and Maude (Munroe) Munroe.
Bill was a member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Whitehead and a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 46, Canso. Bill left home at an early age, and signed up for the army and served overseas in the Second World War, with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. Upon returning home, he worked with the American Airforce, installing the dew line up north for three years. He worked for several years with Foundation Maritime, and traveled around the world serving as chief engineer. Bill was a loving and caring family man who always considered his family first. He was well respected by his peers and was a proud Canadian. Later in life, Bill moved his family to Whitehead, where he founded the Whitehead Volunteer Fire Department and built a community centre. He was an avid carpenter and loved woodworking. He also was an animal lover and he will be missed by his two cats, Scampy and Muffin.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mona (Carter); daughters, Michelle (Craig Richard), Hazel Hill; Marina (Pat) Conway, Whitehead; Willy (Art) Jardine, Beaverbank; son, Billy (Dr. Tanya), Truro; stepchildren, Fred, Kathy, Tish, Anne, and Artie Rhynold; 11 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen; brothers, Wharl, Lindy, Enos, Victor, Ivy and Claryl; sisters, Lola, Melba and Thelma.
Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Monday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, with Rev. Tory Byrne officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made to Eastern Memorial Hospital or Holy Trinity Anglican Church.
