WHITE, Stephen Roderick “Roddie” … 78, Port Hawkesbury, died Friday, May, 2, 2008 in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of the late Stephen and Susan (MacDougall) White. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Port Hawkesbury. When Roddie was still young the family moved to Margaree where he was raised. Upon completion of his schooling he returned to Michigan where he enlisted in the American Army where he served as Corporal for three years. Upon completion of this he remained and worked in the United States. He later returned to Cape Breton and enrolled in vocational training to study the carpentry trade which he worked in for some years. He then met and married the love of his life, Catherine “Kay” Campbell. Roddie and Kay made their home in Port Hawkesbury where he was employed as a draftsman for Nova Scotia Forest Industries until his retirement. Roddie was an avid golfer, bowler, pool player and card player. He was respected by anyone who came in contact with him. A lover of Celtic music, Roddie was a piper and played in the local pipe band during the 70’s and 80’s. He is survived by his wife Kay; sister Mary MacDougall, Detroit; nephew David White, Detroit; sisters-in- law Theresa (Mike) Braun, Pittsburgh, Florence (Anslem) MacDonald, Detroit, Peggy Campbell, Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home; brothers-in-law Steve (Jean) Campbell, Detroit, Ambrose (Kay) Campbell, Judique South. He was predeceased by brother Alex, sisters-in-law Kay White and Jessie MacDonald, brothers-in-law Archie MacDougall, John D. Campbell, Tommy Campbell, Allen Campbell and Dougald Campbell.
Visitation will be 7-9pm Monday and 2-4 and 7-9pm Tuesday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be 10am Wednesday in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Andrew Boyd officiating. Burial in the Parish Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Cemetery Fund or a charity of one’s choice.
