Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Stone, John Henry - 85, St. Peters, N.S., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born on August 5, 1924, John was the youngest child of John Thomas and Mathilda (Robertson) Stone of Lynch’s River. He was a former employee of the St. Peter’s Canal, as a gardener and groundskeeper. He worked various construction jobs in Sydney and the Strait area including: SAERC, NewPage, and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.
Johnny was proudly a founding member of the Cape Breton Fiddler’s Association and was very committed to maintaining the integrity of the original Scottish music on the island. Along with Al Martin and the late Harvey MacEwen, he spent many wonderful evenings playing for barn dances at Anthony Russo’s property in St. George’s Channel. During the 1960’s John performed on CJCB TV (Sydney) with the late Winston “Scotty” Fitzgerald.
Always an avid card player, Johnny was well known for his enthusiasm and strong competitive nature. During his retirement years, he enjoyed “puttering” in his garage and constructing jigsaw puzzles.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth (Clannon) Stone, his niece and foster daughter, Anne (Burke) Cormier, her husband Danny and son Marc, Port Hawkesbury; sisters-in-law, Eva (Ernie) Robertson, River Bourgeois; and Serena (Francis MacDonnell) Clannon, Mabou; also his brother-in-law and nephew Kelly Clannon (wife Nancy, children Tracey Mariner and son Travis) of Point Michaud. John had numerous nieces and nephews throughout Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Western Canada.
He was predeceased by his parents, as well as sisters: Virginia (William) Burke, Gert (Ted) Meunier, Florence (James) Fergusson, Margaret (John) Clannon, and Elizabeth (Joseph) Touesnard. He was predeceased by stepbrother James (Dorothy) Murphy, and stepsisters Mary (Lester) Robertson and Sarah (Daniel) MacNeil.
Visitation will be held from 2 -9 p.m. on Thursday, December 3 in River Bourgeois Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 4 in St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, with Father Everett MacDow officiating. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery.
