PHILLIPS, Mary Ellen (Nevin) -84, We’koqma’q First Nation, died Sunday September, 7, 2008 in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. Born in We’koqma’q, she was a daughter of the late Simon and Nancy (Denny) Nevin and stepfather, the late William B. Sylliboy. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Trinity Church, We’koqma’q. Mary Ellen, known as Kiju or Sukwis to many community members was an avid collector of mugs and hummingbirds memorabilia. She loved bingo and was a member of friends of St. Anne Pilgrimage Group. Kiju was a valued community historian and an expert in the Mi’kmaq language. She is survived by daughters Christine (Roddie) Googoo, Eskasoni, Clare, We’koqma’q; sons Rod (Ida), David, both of We’koqma’q; sister Margaret Poulette, We’koqma’q; sister-in-law Flo Young, Eskasoni; brother Grand Chief Ben W. (Marie) Sylliboy, We’koqma’q; Godchild Cynthia Sark; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Noel, son Richard, daughter Caroline, sisters Theresa Cremo, Mary Jane Nevin in infancy, grandson Cpl. Clint Bernard Phillips, six grandchildren in infancy, brothers-in-law Charles W., John G., daughters-in-law Emily, Diane.
Visitation will be after 4pm Tuesday at the home of her daughter Clare, 200 Mountain View Drive (formerly Reservation Road), We’koqma’q. Funeral mass will be held 11am Thursday in Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Robert McNeil officiating, assisted by Fr. Bernie MacDonald and Fr. Duncan MacIsaac. Burial in the Parish Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh.
