O'HANDLEY, Donald - 75, Little Dover, passed away on February 19, 2008, with his family at his side, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, following a brief illness. Born in Sydney Mines on April 26, 1932, he was a son of the late Daniel and Marcella (MacLean) O'Handley. He worked in retail for many years in Sydney Mines and Antigonish. In 1972, he moved to Canso and retired from Seafreez Foods Inc. in 1992. A member of Star of the Sea Parish, he served on the parish council and was very active in the church. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Santa Maria Council 2024, where he served as Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Canso Lions Club for many years and was a very dedicated volunteer in the community. Left to mourn his loss are his wife of 54 years, Isabel (Vickers); children, Donalda (Leo) MacGillivray, Brian (Susan), Kevin (Wanda), Rick (Anne Marie), Mary Louise (Carl) Bond, and Blaine (Lisa); grandchildren, Patrick (Deanna) and Evan MacGillivray, Janna, Adam, Meaghan, Ryan, Andrew, Lisa, Jennifer, Danielle and Brittany Bond, Justin and Bryden; great-granddaughter, Madison MacKenzie; brothers, Allan (Judy) O'Handley, Waverley; John (Rose), Mississauga, Ont.; sisters, Margie Speirs, Mississauga; Frances MacDonald, Antigonish; Kay (Walter) Magdy, Hay Cove; sister-in-law, Marie O'Handley, Sydney Mines, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter in infancy, sisters, Maya O'Handley, Reynelda Bowen, Louise Dillon, and brother, Harry.
In keeping with Don's wishes, his body has been cremated. Visitation will take place on Friday, February 29, from 7-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral mass will take place on Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m. in Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Canso, Father Daniel Boudreau officiating. Reception to follow in the Canso Lions Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Eastern Memorial Hospital - Palliative Care. The family would like to thank the medical and nursing staff at Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso; St. Martha's Regional Hospital ICU, and 5.2, Halifax Infirmary, QEII, for the care and compassion shown to Dad and his family during this difficult time.
