O'CONNOR, Charles Douglas — 90, of Guysborough, died peacefully in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish, Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Charles was born in Riverside, Guysborough Co., June 29, 1919, to the late Emma Catherine (Cunningham) O'Connor and Guy Francis O'Connor. He served overseas in the Second World War as a gunner with the 6th Regiment, 2nd Division, Royal Canadian Artillery. He was a member of Br. 81, Royal Canadian Legion and a member of St. Anns Parish. In his early years he was employed as a sawyer at MacKeen's Mill and on retirement, janitor at Guysborough Municipal High School. Family was very important and his door was always open to the many visits with family, friends and neighbors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and watching all sports. Charles is survived by sons, Clair, Truro; Gerald (Sheila), Woodstock, Ont.; Bill (Karen) Bass River; grandchildren, Angela and Juli, Cathy and Lynn, Melissa and Ashley and step grandchildren, Kohl and Kollin; daughters, Ann (Don) Morrow, Boylston; Donna (Ray) Hart, Kemptown; Noreen (Larry) Hudson; Tatamagouche; grandchildren, Darlene, Stephen, Heather and James, Todd, Rocky and Kimberly, Donnie, Tracy, Shawn and step grandchildren, Grace, Patricia and Tina and seventeen great-grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings, Lawrence Joseph (Lorraine), Naughton, Ont.; Mary (Sonny) Surrette, Port Felix and many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Dolores, Mildred, Helen and Florence. Charles was predeceased by his parents; wife, Bertha Rumley; sons, Ronald and Darrell; daughter-in-law, Sheila (Dexter); siblings, Francis, Hilda, Louis, Lawrence, Guy, John, James, Raphael, Veronica, Bud, William, Kenneth and Anna.
At Charles' request, cremation has taken place, no visitation or services, family burial at a later date in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Guysborough Memorial Hospital Foundation at Guysborough, NS B0H 1N0. Family would like to thank Dorothy MacPherson and Howe MacLean for all their hard work and kindness.
