In her 100th year, Phemie MacDougall, The Points, Richmond, Co., passed away peacefully at Taigh Solas, Northside General Hospital on Sunday, February 17, 2008.Born on September 7, 1908 at Mira Ferry, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Neil D. and Margaret (MacDonald) MacCuish.
During her early years she taught school in various places and then moved to the U.S. in the late 1940's where she met and married Daniel MacDougall of The Points, West Bay, C.B. Phemie was employed with the Jordan Marsh department store in Boston, Mass. for over 25 years.Phemie and Daniel retired to their cottage (Quiet Place) at the Points and enjoyed life there for many years.
She is survived by one stepdaughter, Joan Littlefield and two stepsons, Donnie and Bruce, all in the U.S. along with several step- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews including Florence (Cameron) Coletti of Lower Sackville, N.S. and Don (Margie) Cameron of Louisbourg. Besides her husband, who passed away in 1986, Phemie was predeceased by one brother Fraser, Alexander and Donald John in infancy, two sisters Christine (Gordon) Cameron and Annabel and Mary Belle in infancy.
The family extends sincere thanks to Willena and Alvin Ross and their family and the staff of Taigh Solas for the wonderful care given to Phemie over the past eight years. She was treated with dignity and respect and considered part of the family at both homes.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9pm Wednesday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be 2pm Thursday in Black River United Church with Rev. Gordon MacDermid officiating. Burial in MacKay Cemetery, St. George’s Channel at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Black River United Church or a charity of one’s choice.
