George, Jean Bennett -81, Canso, formerly of Philips Harbour, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009, in Guysborough Memorial Hospital, Guysborough. Born in Hazel Hill, she was a daughter of the late Lemuel and Rosamond (Rhynold) Bennett and adopted daughter of Aunt and Uncle Freeman and Harriet (Faulkenham) Rhynold of Philips Harbour.
Jean was a homemaker for many years, and was postmistress for nine years until its closing. She was employed at the former Hazel Hill Rest Home, Canso Seafoods and Hart's Store in Canso. Jean was a member of the former Queensport Baptist Church and an adherent to the Canso and Half Island Cove Baptist Churches. She is survived by daughter, Edna (Eddie) Marr, Canso; sons, Kenneth (Leslie), Brian (Susan), both of Dartmouth; Francis (Bonnie), Dennis (Agnes), Bruce (Sharon), Eric (Elizabeth), all of Philips Harbour; Kevin (Christa), Half Island Cove, and also leaves to mourn 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Ruby Swaine, Canso; brother, Gerald Bennett, Canso. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Frank; sisters, Mabel Swaine, Ethel George, Hattie Johnson, and Dorothy Pembroke; brothers, Lawrence, Calvin, Oren, Albert, Russell and Nathan Rhynold.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 p.m., today and 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in Canso Baptist Church with Rev. David Wheeler officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Guysborough. Family flowers only please.
