Reid, Robert Roy “Bob” … 79, Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home, and formerly of Yarmouth, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Born in Yarmouth on Sept. 23, 1929, Bob was the son of William and Charlotte (Levy) Reid. He lived most of his life in Yarmouth until his illness in 2003, when he went to Port Hawkesbury to be near his family. Bob worked most of his adult life in Yarmouth in the grocery business beginning at the Yarmouth Royal Store and after more than thirty years with Sobeys, retired in 1989 as manager. Bob cherished whatever car he owned, his firefighting and golfing buddies and the family pets. In 2004, he was honored in Yarmouth for having served 50 years as a Volunteer Firefighter; he was a former Captain of St. George’s No. 1 Fire Company and President of the Yarmouth Fire Department. For many years Bob was instrumental in the St. George Fire Company Children’s Christmas Party. He was a member of the Yarmouth Golf and Country Club. He was predeceased in 1995 by his wife of 40 years, Joan (Martin); by his sisters Clarice Penny and Dorothy Stimpson. He is survived by his only daughter Lynn and her husband, Cyril Gillis and his pride and joy, his grandchildren, Brock (Sarah MacDonald) and Lauren, all of Port Hawkesbury; his sisters Isabelle (Ralph) Crosby, Port Colbourne, Ont., Catherine (Harry) Foley, Rexdale, Ont., sister-in-law Anne Brown, Yarmouth, brother-in-law, Ted Stimpson, Saskatoon, and numerous nieces and nephews. His family would like to thank the caring staff of the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home where Bob has resided for the past 6 years.
Visitation will be held in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 567 Main Street, Yarmouth, 2-4 and 7-9 pm, Thursday, May 7 with funeral services in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel at 11 am on Friday, May 8 with Rev. Leslie Robinson officiating. Burial to follow in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Bob’s memory to The Firefighters’ Museum of Nova Scotia, 451 Main Street, Yarmouth, B5A 1G9 or the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home, 2 MacQuarrie Drive Ext., Port Hawkesbury, B9A 3A2. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury and the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth.
