LUMSDEN, Roberta Mae - It is said that good things come in small packages and that statement truly applied to Bertie. Tiny in stature, but mighty in personality, will and action, she made a big impact on everyone who knew her. Bertie was born in her beloved Canso and moved to Bedford as a young girl. She was a loyal and loving daughter to her parents, Alden and Alice (Tyler) Lumsden. She was pre-deceased by her parents and her loving partner, Jim George. Bertie was above all, a woman of faith. As a lifelong member of Bedford Baptist Church, she served in many parts of ministry over the years as a choir member, Sunday School teacher, Backyard Bible Club leader, Prayer Chain organizer and Visitation Committee member. She had a special heart for Missions and was involved with the Women’s Missions Society for many years. She was part of a wonderful group of women friends from the church who cared for, prayed for and supported one another over the years. Bertie worked as a babysitter for many Bedford families and loved and cared for more than 60 children over the years. Her whole face would light up whenever little ones were around and she had an amazing way of listening and connecting with children. Bertie lived on Rutledge Street for most of her life. She proudly took care of her home and property and was a thoughtful neighbour. She had lifelong friendships with many of the young people she grew up with in Central Bedford. She was well known to the taxi drivers, grocery store clerks and bank tellers she saw on her weekly errands and always stopped to talk and have a bit of fun. She was proud of being thrifty and loved her trips to the Dollar Store! Bertie had a wonderful way of letting people know she cared. She kept a full basket of greeting cards and stamps by her chair so she always had one on hand to send for every occasion. She loved to make beautiful knitted blankets and sweaters to welcome new babies and always made sure to have a stock of candy canes to give to children at Christmas. She loved to visit with people over the phone and was always happy to welcome you into her home for a cup of tea and a chat. Bertie had a well-loved collection of gospel music and enjoyed every opportunity to listen to the Gaithers and the Blackwood Brothers. Bertie loved her family, looked out for her siblings and was an incredibly proud Aunt. She is survived by her sister Carol, Bedford, brother Gerald (Nellie), Canso, nephew Robert (Sydney), Edmonton and several special cousins.
