DORTON, Walter Joseph - 75, Port Hawkesbury, passed away peacefully in R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish, with his loving family at his side on Wednesday, November 5, 2008. Born in Port Hawkesbury, he was a son of the late Hughie J. and Stella Marie (MacRae) Dorton. Walter was a retired employee of the town of Port Hawkesbury Works Department. For many years he worked for the Department of Highways. He loved fishing, hunting, and working. He was a former member of the Port Hawkesbury Fish and Game Association. Walter loved life and lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed music and a good tune. He will be sadly missed by his many friends and especially his family. He is survived by his common-law wife, Mary Viola Fraser; daughters, Jacquline (Terry) DeCoste, Mulgrave, Harriet (Ronald) Timmons, Margaree Centre; Lisa Campbell, Port Hawkesbury; Irene Dorton (Vernon McNamara), Mulgrave; sons, Daniel (Kelly Lengert), Edmonton, Alta.; William, Troy; stepchildren, Joseph (Marion) Fraser, Steep Creek; Carmie (Ron Hansen), Fairview; Darlene (Ian Duncan), Halifax; brother, Hughie Herb (Elsie Marchand), Port Hawkesbury; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sons, Walter and Elva; brothers, Daniel R., William; sisters, Peggy Smith, Martha MacDougall.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, with a vigil service Saturday 2 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury, with Father Andrew Boyd officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Walter's family would like to send special thanks to the staff of the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home (Scotia Hall). Your prayers and support were greatly appreciated. Many thanks for the wonderful care Walter received from the home care workers in Port Hawkesbury and Dr. J.A. Collins.
