KJOLBRO, Jogvan Fridrik – 69 – After a long and very courageous battle, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jogvan Kjolbro on Thursday, February 18, 2010, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, NS. Born in Klaksvik, Borðoy, Faroe Islands, he was the eldest son of the late Ewald and Gerda (Niclasen) Kjolbro. With a lifelong dream to become an architect, Jogvan revealed his artistic talents and passion to sculpt, draw, design jewelry, and construct model boats at a very early age. As a young adult, Jogvan exhibited his sculptures at the National Gallery in the Faroe Islands. His passion and talent to create remained with Jogvan his entire life and many of his pieces have found homes in the Faroe Islands, Denmark and Canada. A world traveler with a constant desire for new adventures, Jogvan worked at various jobs which included construction on the Sydney Opera House in Australia. Jogvan returned to the Faroe Islands where he established a company that specialized in both designing and constructing homes. He later moved to Greenland and went to work for a Danish seafood export company. Expansion and new challenges were in Jogvan’s nature, a trait he owed to his grandfather. He left Greenland and moved to Galway, Ireland where he founded a small seafood export business. Ultimately, he returned to the Faroe Islands and enrolled in a mariner’s college where he graduated at the top of his class. With a singular ambition to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and become a successful businessman, Jogvan began his career on the sea as a captain on a Greenlandic shrimp trawler and subsequently became owner and captain of his own longliner in Greenland. In 1989 Jogvan founded Farocan Incorporated with offices in Ottawa, ON and Mulgrave, NS, and, as the guiding force in the company oversaw and supervised the construction of two state of the art factory freezer shrimp trawlers, M/V Aqviq and M/V Kinguk, in Braatvag, Norway. In 1995, he founded ACS Trading Inc., a seafood processing company in Mulgrave, NS. As owner and president of both Farocan Incorporated and ACS Trading Inc., Jogvan’s companies employed in excess of 300 people. The companies were multicultural including Inuit from Northern Quebec and Baffin Island, Faroese, Danes and Canadians. Farocan Incorporated and ACS Trading Inc. processed and shipped seafood products worldwide and contributed greatly to the local economy creating many jobs and opportunities for residents of the Strait Area. In addition to his talent as a visual artist and sculptor, Jogvan enjoyed music. By nature, Jogvan was a shy man but when prompted he would play the guitar or the piano for his guests. He was an incomparable host, had impeccable taste, and was a man of boundless and selfless generosity. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his partner, Dawna MacDonald; and is survived by his sons, Ewald (Mirjiam); Esberg (Norma); Jon (Gudrun); Andrew (Elise); sister, Karin Nordero; brother, Joannes (Selma); thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, and sisters, Marita and Fridgerd Sorensen. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m, Tuesday, February 23, St. Andrews Anglican Church, Mulgrave, NS, with Reverend Susan Best officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. Heartfelt thanks to Hope Beanlands, Scientific Director, NCCDH, for her continued kindness and the support of friends at the NCCDH; Mr. and Mrs. Merven Proctor for their friendship and invaluable assistance, Mrs. Carmel Benoit, friends, and Mrs. Ruth MacDonald. Sincere thanks and gratitude to Nancy Cameron, Palliative Care Coordinator and the professional and compassionate staff in all capacities at Strait Richmond Hospital and St. Martha’s Regional Hospital; Paula Fraser, and Claire MacDonald and staff at Continuing Care in Port Hawkesbury, Drs.
