BERNARD, Frank Louis — 61, Waycobah First Nation, Inverness Co. We regret to announce the sudden passing of our loved one, Frank Louis Bernard, from Waycobah First Nation, on Wednesday, February 17, 2010, which occurred at home. Frank was a son of the late Charles J. (Soln) and Rose (Smith) Bernard, of Waycobah. Frank was born on May 10, 1948, in Sydney, where the family lived while Charles worked at the Sydney Steel Plant. A few years later, Frank spent the early years of his life as a child growing up in Eskasoni. In his early teens, they moved to Waycobah First Nation, where he spent the rest of his life. He also spent time travelling and going to school in Ontario but returned home to help the family and took great pride as a woodsman for many years. He spoke many times of the healthy lives they lead as young men but mentioned the struggles of being raised in First Nation communities with the poverty levels they experienced. He enjoyed fixing up cars and was a big fan of Elvis all his life, every so often you could hear him singing to some 60's tunes. Severe diabetes affected his ability to move and live a normal life over the last ten years especially with the amputation of his leg. Frank really valued family and the importance of trying to live a good life. He would comment on how lucky people were to have a healthy life as his later years were ones of great difficulty health wise. He tried to make the most of it and continued to try to be employed in different jobs until he couldn't, after which he spent at home with his best friend "Homer" (pet poodle) and going for a"cruise". He was always known for his wonderfully creative stories and would always be good to provide a laugh to all who would listen. Frank was also a man of great faith and belief in God, he enjoyed visiting family and friends. Frank is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Genevieve (Francis), of Eskasoni. He will be dearly missed by his remaining family, brothers, Louis Joe (Alexandrine), Gilbert, Charles Jr., Robert (Kelly), John (Darla) and sisters, Annie (Toswal/ Ray), Mary Janet, Madeline, all of Waycobah and Mary Catherine (Molly Benedict) of Wagmatcook, as well countless nieces, nephews and extended family. Frank also leaves to mourn his godchildren, Tillie Googoo, Laura Lee Bernard (niece) and Karmin Bernard (niece). He was predeceased by his loving parents and brothers, Benjamin Bernard and Samuel Bernard, in infancy. Funeral services will begin with a wake to be held at his family home, 8967 Trans Canada Hwy. 105, Waycobah after 7 p.m. Saturday. Funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. Monday, from Blessed Katerie Parish, Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Waycobah, with Father Bernie MacDonald officiating and Father Robert McNeil con-celebrating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh.
