McLean, John Dougald – Whycocomagh. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of John Dougald McLean on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, at the age of 93. Born in Inverness, on January 13, 1928 to the late Dan C. and Margaret McLean. Survived by sons, Ted (Debbie), Halifax; Karl (Rachel), Ottawa; granddaughter, Melanie, Ottawa; step-grandson, Daniel (Jen) and their children, Niagara Falls; brother, Sandy (Nancy), Port Hawkesbury. Also survived by former daughters-in-law, Roxanne Doran and Cathy Rowe, Ottawa, sister-in-law, Florence MacKeigan; brother-in-law, Ian MacKeigan (Shirley); sister-in-law, Sheila MacKay (Archie), all from Whycocomagh, and many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends. Predeceased by parents, loving wife, Dorothy (MacKeigan); brother, Donald and wife Muriel; sister, Mary (MacAulay) and husband John E. Also predeceased by sister-in-law, Kate Turbill (MacKeigan) and husband Kenzie; brother-in-law, Archie MacKay (Sheila); several nieces and nephews, former spouses Glena Trépanier, Annie Mae Gillis, and many members of their families. Also known by many other names: Mac, Chug, Uncle Dougie, Grandpa, Dad, and of course, O.M. Proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1955 to 1972. Stationed at several bases across Canada, including three 6-month tours in Alert, Nunavut. Also served in the U.N. Emergency Force in Egypt and the Congo. Worked for many years as Sergeant with the House of Commons protective staff in Ottawa, where he raised his family. Despite his interest in travelling the world, he always wanted to settle back in Whycocomagh. He was active in the community as a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 123, Whycocomagh; a proud member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Whycocomagh; a member of the Sircom Lodge #66 for over 67 years, and a staunch supporter of the Waterfront, attending as many events as he could, especially the Thursday night jam sessions with his brother Sandy after their weekly visit with their sister Mary. Never missing an opportunity to play cribbage (except on Sundays), he enjoyed many years playing with his brothers-in-law Ian and Archie. Archie’s son Ivan became his new rival, and many a game ensued, while keeping an eye on their beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. Many thanks to all the wonderful family and friends that looked out for him over the years. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, April 9 in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 10, from St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Whycocomagh with Margie MacIntyre officiating. In keeping with COVID-19 guildlines, you will be required to sign in with your name and phone number at both the funeral home and the church. Face coverings must be worn at all times and social distancing measures will be in effect. Burial will be in Stewartdale Cemetery at a later date.
