Downard, Garry Robert "Bob" Age 79, Long Stretch Road, resided at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home. It is with profound sadness that the family of Bob Downard announce his passing. Bob passed away in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 surrounded by family who loved him. Born in Toronto, Ontario, the adopted son of Frank and Mary Downard. After the passing of his mother, Bob was raised by Frank and Harriet Sampson in Elliot Lake, Ontario. While visiting Cape Breton, Bob met the love of his life Ann whom he married and became a part of the MacKinnon family. Bob and Ann had five wonderful daughters, Lorrie (Kenneth), Evanston; Bonnie (Howard), Crandall Road; Cindy (Rob), Bedford; Robin (TJ), Iqaluit; Katelyn, Halifax. Bob also leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren, Robert, Cassie, Heather, Kara, Abby, Josh, Matthew and Jack. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Ann; his mother and father-in-law, Stanley and Isabel MacKinnon; sister-in-law, June MacKinnon; and brother-in-law, Regeant Deschenes. In his early years Bob was a mechanic, he operated Port Hastings Esso, worked as a miner, a long-haul truck driver in Alberta and finished off his working career at the Department of Transportation in Port Hawkesbury. In his off time, he could be found reading, doing crosswords and spending time with his family. Bob was a member of St. David’s United Church and volunteered at the Port Hastings Historical Society. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 7 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 8 at 11 a.m. in St. David’s United Church, Port Hastings with Sandi Irving officiating. Burial in St. David's Cemetery. Donations in memory of Bob may be made to St. David's United Church.
