MACDONALD, Donald "Bernie Sheman"
Bernie, at the age of 80, West Bay Road, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family, on July 15th, 2021. Born in Creignish Rear, Cape Breton, he was the second youngest of 24.
He is survived by his wife Debbi (Tobin), West Bay Road; son Donnie (Holly Langley), Port Hawkesbury; daughter Marlene (Robbie Wyre), Evanston; granddaughters Amy (Victoria), Halifax; Mya (Nick) Mineville; stepchildren Leanne, Mac (Bryanne), Terri (Vance), and step-grandchildren Kaden, Rylee, and Coen, all from Halifax; numerous nieces and nephews, and his little companion Kalli. Also survived by sister Florence (Archie D, second husband Bruce), Hamilton; brother James (Mary), Creignish; and sister Josephine (Jim), Woodstock. He was predeceased by first wife Sadie Marie (Kennedy), siblings John, Angus G, Flora, John Dan, Alexander, Archie, Dougall, Hector, Joseph, Annie Margaret, Dougall "D.Y.", Mary Margaret, Duncan, John Duncan, Tom, Hugh, Alex, Vincent, Anne Belle, and Mary Marcella.
Bernie made friends everywhere he went. Formerly known as "Bernie Backhoe", he was the first backhoe operator for Norvon Enterprises, worked for Ocean Paving for several years, as well as a heavy equipment operator at the landfill in River Denys. He was also self employed for many years.
Bernie loved bingo, however he would always be very pokey getting in the door, talking to everyone he met. His wife Debbi, was always asked "Where’s Bernie tonight?" and you would often hear Debbi reply "Oh he’s right behind me. He’s like Mastercard, I never leave home without him". You’d never find him too far away from his constant companion Kalli; her weight would fluctuate by the amount of attention she got at the table. He was a great story teller, a charmer, and the ladies loved him; he never had to worry about his seat being saved at bingo. He was a real "McGyver"; he could fix anything with screws and duct tape.
Bernie fought a very courageous battle for the last 9 months, and his last week was very peaceful. He was comforted by his family, and the compassionate care from staff at St. Martha's Hospital, Palliative Care unit.
Visitation will be held at Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Tuesday, July 20th, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A celebration of Bernie’s life will be held at Stella Marris Parish, Creignish, Wednesday, July 21st, at 11am, with Father Callistus Abazie officiating, with Father Dan MacDonald. Internment at a later date.
Family flowers only, donations in memory of Bernie Sheman MacDonald can be made to Palliative Care, St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish. Online condolences can be sent to: www.haverstocks.com
Memories of Bernie will always remain with us forever, and good memories will replace our sadness.
