Obituary
Please share a memory of Elizabeth to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that the family of Elizabeth (Betty) Margaret Talbot announce her death on Sunday, September 26, 2021, at the age of 80. Born on May 9, 1941, she was the daughter of the late James Frederick and Ella Beth (Morehouse) Haynes of Canso, Nova Scotia.
As a young woman, Betty taught school in Upper White Head from 1957-1958 and then attended the NS Normal College in Truro from 1958-1959. During her time in Truro, she worked at Robertson’s Candy. It’s no surprise that Robertson’s Satin Mix remained one of her Christmas time favourites. After completing her teacher training, she taught grades 7-9 in Canso until 1962.
While living in Canso, Betty met her loving husband of 59 years, Louis Talbot. As a newly married couple in 1962, Betty and Lou moved to Port Hawkesbury, where they raised their two sons Derrick (Annamarie) and Darren (Pam). Betty taught school full time from 1962-1964 and then worked as a substitute teacher for 30 more years. In her later years, Betty became the proud grandmother of Caleb (Erika) and Charity and great-grandmother to Ronni Mae.
Betty will be fondly remembered for her great love of crafting. She spent countless hours making exquisite crafts to sell at local shops and craft shows as well as to cruise ship passengers at the Joan Harris Cruise Pavilion in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Thousands of her famous ribbon balls adorn the Christmas trees of folks from all around the world.
In addition to crafting, Betty loved playing cards. Many laughs were shared around the kitchen table as cards were dealt and the ding-a-ling dish filled with dimes. Betty was a skilled card player, so it was quite a thrill to win a game against her.
Throughout her life, Betty was an avid bird watcher, and she contributed annually to the Nova Scotia bird count. She also enjoyed singing in the choir, gardening, fishing, sewing, collecting stamps and coins, doing word puzzles, and watching tennis and nature shows.
In addition to her husband and children, Betty is survived by her brother, Dewey (Corbeil, Ontario); sister, Joyce Williams (Havre Boucher, Nova Scotia); brothers-in-law, Bruce Hendsbee and Herb Talbot (Barb); sisters-in-law, Eileen Haynes, Geneve Richard-Haynes, and Phyllis (Talbot) Ehler (Arnold Hendsbee), as well as many nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her twin, Rosa Ella (died in infancy May 12, 1941); brothers, Albert (died in infancy), James, Fred, and Thornton; sisters, Nancy Reynolds and Phyllis Hendsbee; brothers-in-law Arnold Reynolds and Reginald Williams; and sister-in-law Marlene Haynes.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Strait Richmond Hospital for the exceptional care they provided.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in Betty’s name to the Fourth Hill Cemetery (Canso, Nova Scotia) or Hope for Wildlife. Condolences to the family may be shared by visiting www.haverstocks.com
