AUCOIN, Joseph Arthur … 81, Grand Etang, Inverness, Co. passed away peacefully Friday, May, 2, 2008 in hospice care at the home of his adopted daughter Terri Simpson in Boylston, Guysborough, Co. after a sudden and short bout with cancer. Born January, 27, 1927 in Point Cross, Cape Breton, the youngest of twelve children born to Severin and Marie (LeFort) AuCoin.
Joining the Royal Canadian Merchant Marines, at a younger age than was asked for, he traveled the seas during WWII. After the war he worked as a self employed painter residing in the United States. He was always inspiring and entertaining people with his music and artistic talent of his cartoons and the many tales of his life. He returned to Cape Breton in 1992 where he resided in Grand Etang. Even in his later years he continued to paint and with his love of music encouraged the many talented musicians of the area. He played in the Orchestra Des Retraits as well as other local groups. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 32 in Cheticamp. He is survived by his wife Jane AuCoin, Machias, Maine; daughter Melissa AuCoin; son Brett AuCoin; adopted children Terri (Peter) Simpson, Bill Webber, David AuCoin, Todd (Jennifer) AuCoin; several grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; sisters Yvonne (Fred) Christ, Jannette Taylor, Halifax. Special mention of Linda AuCoin and Kelly. He was predeceased by brothers Thomas, George, Amide, Louis, Luke, Delpen, sisters Adelaide, Lucy, Sophie.
A memorial of his life will be held Friday, May, 9,2008 at 7pm at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 32, Cheticamp with a Legion service to be held Saturday, May, 10 in the Memory Room of the Legion at 11am. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough.
